PROPS go out

But what if children are given a complete professional theatre production in which they are allowed to decide everything? What will be shown on stage and what will be different? ‘PROPS go out’ finds out: In a collective process, children between the ages of 9 and 12 write their own play, decide on stage design, costumes, music and public relations - and direct professional (adult) actors on the stage of the GRIPS Podewil. In the decades-long tradition of co-determination at the GRIPS theatre, the decision-making power of the children is thus expanded in this project.

On 12 June 2025, the resulting play ‘Don't stop dreaming’ will celebrate its premiere at the GRIPS Theatre in Berlin.

About the play ‘Don't stop dreaming’

A spooky search for the monsters in our heads and the shadows in our lives.
We dream when the deep sleep phase is coming to an end. In this interim period, recent experiences, old memories and ancient fears intermingle. Dream and reality are closely interwoven in the play Don't stop dreaming. Real people mingle in the dream world, dreamed figures suddenly appear in school lessons. It soon becomes difficult to tell the difference. Between reality and fiction. Between cosy reverie and nightmare. What was just a game can tip over at any time.

About the project ‘PROPS go out’
Last season, the GRIPS theatre was already examined by the actors: Which play styles and children's performances do they find exciting? What works well for them, what doesn't? Through their own exploration of the theatre and its elements, they sharpen their view, form their own ideas into test balloons and thus open up the stage of the GRIPS Podewil to the stories and aesthetics of the young theatre makers. They are accompanied by adults as they conquer the theatre.

In the 24/25 season, we are in the middle of this journey; 60 children developed stage elements, (moving) text and music during the autumn holidays. Between detective stories, cyborgs and unfair teachers, there are many problems that the project participants want to tackle: Selfish adults play with the children's future, nasty classmates make learning difficult and the spider in the bedroom keeps some of them awake. Bullying plays just as much a role in the experiences and stories as racism, queer hostility and sexism. Enough material for plenty of nightmares, which will play a central role in the play.
From this large group of theatre makers, 12 children are now leading the development phase of the play. They will repeatedly enter into negotiation processes with the adult actors and the project team: For their right to co-determination, a production directly from a child's perspective and an exemplary cultural enterprise of different generations of theatre makers.
